top holiday tips

The cost of taking a holiday goes up considerably over the summer months, so if you need to save money on your holiday then take a look at the following tips to save you some money when travelling.

Book your holiday online, lots of airlines and tour operators now have transactional websites. You can save a packet online, compared to visiting the high street travel agents. Some good travel sites are lastminute, thefirstresort and teletextholidays

Book your holiday off-peak and mid-week if you can. You’ll find that hotels and flights are much cheaper during the off-season. And even if you can’t secure a reduction you might be able to blag an upgrade or a more glamorous room.

Don’t be afraid of asking for a reduction from a tour operator. Haggling is becoming more and more common place and it makes more sense to them to fill a place for less than lose it completely. They will probably give you free transfers, free booking fee and waive the ticket on departure costs if you are booking late.

You can save hundreds of pounds by using one of the low cost airlines to jet off to a destination and then taking the local train somewhere more exotic – and expensive - to get to. Just grab a map and access the local tourist office and off you go!

Buy your sandwiches and bottles of water before heading to the overpriced shops in the airport. And don’t even think about buying refreshments on the plane.

Make sure you book your holiday from a reputable ABTA agent. Anything without this approval could stain your dream holiday with tears rather than with suntan lotion.

Make sure you don't buy your travel insurance from a travel agent - this is nearly always the most expensive option. Have a look at quotes from Travel Insurance Online or Post Office Travel Insurance.

Buy your holiday money at the best rates available, the best known holiday exchange rates in the UK are the Post Office and by ordering from Travelex in advance and then pick up the money at the airport, but pay by debit card, otherwise they may charge you a fee for using your credit card.
