broadband basics

In the UK there are a number of firms offering Broadband internet access. This is internet access that is always on and ready to use and is many times times faster than a dial up connection. The other plus point is that Broadband allows you to free up your telephone, so you can use the telephone even though someone is on the internet, with a dialup connection if someone tries to call you while you are on the internet they will hear an engaged tone.

You can get broadband through a cable provider, a satellite broadband company or through your existing BT phone line.

Cable Broadband Internet Access

All the main cable companies who provide you with telephones and digital television packages in your area can offer Broadband access. If you are already signed to a cable company then it is a good idea to get broadband with them, such as Telewest Broadband or NTL Broadband, as they can probably bundle your package together and save you even more.

BT Phone Broadband Internet Access

If you cannot get cable services in your area then your only real choice is broadband down your existing BT phone line. In order to get Broadband in your area your local exchange must have been upgraded to handle broadband, you can find out if this has happened when you try and purchase a broadband package, as they will usually ask you for your telephone number when you go to sign up online.

Broadband Packages

Monthly broadband packages do vary in price, so find out which is best for you.

It is also worth noting that some Broadband providers also offer other benefits when signing up, such as free email services, free web space or like Tiscali Broadband they may even provide a number of free SMS Messages per day.

Also I would choose a package that offers a free modem and free set up, unless you already have a broadband modem or a router available.

You should also note that a broadband modem will usually come with a DSL filter, this is a little white box which sits between your phone socket and your broadband modem. If you have more than one telephone socket and are using it, then you will need to have a DSL Filter box attached to each socket. These DSL filters are quite cheap to buy and can be around £2-£3 each.

Another point is that most broadband packages tie you into a contract for 12 months, although it is known that Virgin only tie you up for 1 month at a time. Payment is usually taken by way of a debit or credit card monthly.
